Brief History The Million TAPs for Peace Campaign is patterned after the Million Minutes of Peace Appeal originated by Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University for the International Year of Peace (1986) declared by the United Nations. The Million Minutes of Peace Appeal asked people to participate by spending time in meditation, positive thinking or prayer for peace. The reasoning was that as people around the world reflected on peace, they would focus on the fundamental unity of the human spirit and the eternal realities of which all are a part. It will highlight the waste and shallowness of conflict. The Million Minutes project also aimed at giving individuals a sense of participation in dealing with an issue that most people consider quite beyond their power to influence. As one housewife and mother wrote in making her donation of 30 minutes: “ Peace has to start as an individual decision. By making a choice to focus even a small segment of my day on peace, I am taking that first step towards every rational person's fantasy—saving the world. ” (Ophelia Julien, USA ). The Million TAPs for Peace Campaign added acts of peace to the original idea of thoughts of peace. |
